NYU Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions’ Ceramics Professor Linda Sormin and student Rhea Barve imagine new ways to work together, exchange ideas and labor in their class “Projects in Ceramics.”

About the NYU Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions: Located in New York’s Gramercy , the Department of Art and Art Professions serves as a vibrant site for artistic experimentation and intellectual exchange. The Department draws upon a faculty of acclaimed artists, scholars, and critics. We offer programs and courses that integrate technical skills with theoretical understanding within the context of a world-class university setting. BFA and MFA programs in studio art are interdisciplinary, and combine cultural theory courses with facilities in painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, computer art and design, video, ceramics, metalsmithing, and installation.

The department’s MA programs include Art + Education, Visual Arts Administration, Costume Studies, and Art Therapy. New York City’s galleries, museums, schools, studios, and performance spaces, from Chelsea to Brooklyn and the Lower East Side, are an integral part of New York University’s campus, as are the university’s vast intellectual and academic resources.

The Bangkok-born Canadian artist Linda Sormin has transformed the gallery in a site-responsive installation that features the partial hull of a ship, ceramic sculptures, found and solicited objects and Leda clay – a prevalent local material which functions as a potent metaphor for the literal instability of the ground on which we live.

In this episode of Sheridan “Voices” we meet Linda Sormin, Head of the Ceramics Department at Sheridan College. Linda describes her “connectedness” to her work: something each of us might emulate, whatever our trade. Linda reinforces the importance of hands-on experience, focus upon the process, pushing the envelope and taking risks as part of creativity: all working towards achieving strong outcomes. Pride of work and pride of craft come through loud and clear. Linda shows that work is not just about a job…it is a reflection of self……..a vehicle for self-expression. As seen before in the “Voices” project, passion and pride of work makes for better experiences all around.

Think about your daily pursuits….is there room to bring more of yourself to them? How can the creative skills, practices and processes within the arts be used In the world of Business?

BIO

Linda Sormin’s sculptures are a journey through personal archeology. Her open-ended ceramics enfold many voices and labors, from the donated memorabilia of friends and strangers in distant places, to the hands of those assisting, to the dumpster diving, searching for the discarded. The complex membranes of pinched clay provide a porous conduit bridging and breaking bonds, entwining stories and histories among those who define themselves through their separations.

Born in Thailand, working in North America, Europe and Asia, Sormin is influenced by kinetic energy, complexity, and disparate social/cultural/visual forces. While migration and identity form the backbone of the work, it’s the disruptive dissonance within her balletic balance that breaths life. The technical considerations of how Sormin’s work evolves are never far from the stories within. Multiple firings, various clays, smooth and rough surface, glaze, contrasting color, and cast away materials, are all integral elements in forming the non-linear narratives of discrete sculpture, and immersive installations.

Linda Sormin is Associate Professor of Studio Art at New York University, Steinhardt. Prior to NYU, Sormin was Professor of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2016 – 2019), and Associate Professor (2006- 2011) at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been extensively exhibited throughout Europe, the United States and Asia, including Jogja National Museum, Yogyakarta, Indonesia; CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, Middelfart, Denmark; and West Norway Museum of Decorative Art, Bergen, Norway. Collections include the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, Alfred, NY; Arizona State University Art Museum; CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, and others.
